Cross-platform play in NHL 23 won’t be as straightforward as one might assume. During a press briefing for Electronic Arts’ upcoming hockey simulation, developers revealed that players would still only be able to team up with gamers on the same platform as themselves but would be able to match against players on other console platforms. For example, if you play on Xbox One you can still only team up with players who are also on Xbox One, but you can match against players who are on either Xbox One or PS4. It’s the same in reverse, as PS4 players can only team up with other PS4 players, but they can match against anyone on PS4 or Xbox One.
EA Vancouver clarified that cross-play at launch will limit play against — and not with — different console platforms. Those on Xbox One can play with and against others on Xbox One, but can only play against those on PS4. The same, of course, is true for current-gen. That also means that players across platforms will not be able to join a singular EASHL hockey club, as a prime example.
That caveat aside, cross-play will be enabled for all HUT activities alongside World of Chel modes including EASHL, Threes and Ones.
Cross-progression in NHL 22 allowed players to transfer certain items from old-gen to the current-generation of consoles, and the same will apply for NHL 23. In November, EA Sports will give players the ability to transfer “their HUT team value and progress” from the PS4/Xbox One to the PS5/Xbox Series X version.
